Anesthetic Preconditioning as Endogenous Neuroprotection in Glaucoma

Blindness in glaucoma is the result of death of Retinal Ganglion Cells (RGCs) and their axons. RGC death is generally preceded by a stage of reversible dysfunction and structural remodeling. Current treatments aimed at reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) are ineffective or incompletely effective in management of the disease. IOP-independent neuroprotection or neuroprotection as adjuvant to IOP ...

Inhaled anesthetic sevoflurane: neurotoxicity or neuroprotection in the developing brain

The practice of pediatric anesthesia has changed during the last 30 years with a noticeable reduction in mortality and serious morbidity. This improvement resulted, in part, from the introduction of a new anesthetic agent called sevoflurane. Recently, data from animal and human studies have shown that sevoflurane may have neurotoxic effects on the developing brain, and these effects can cause s...

Anesthetic Management for the Morbidly Obese, Medically Complicated Parturient

Obesity creates strain on the body's most vital organ systems. The most significant pathophysiologic changes occur in the pulmonary, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and endocrine systems. Obesity during pregnancy increases the risk of death for mothers and their newborns. Obesity exaggerates the normal physiologic changes of pregnancy creating more work for an already stressed cardiorespirator...

Neuroprotection in Schizophrenia and Its Therapeutic Implications

Schizophrenia is a chronic and debilitating mental disorder. The persisting negative and cognitive symptoms that are unresponsive to pharmacotherapy reveal the impairment of neuroprotective aspects of schizophrenia. In this review, of the several neuroprotective factors, we mainly focused on neuroinflammation, neurogenesis, and oxidative stress. We conducted a narrative and selective review. Ne...

Does anesthetic provide similar neuroprotection to therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest?

In the previous issue of Critical Care, Meybohm and colleagues provide evidence to support hypothermia as a kind of therapeutic option for patients suffering cardiac arrest. Although anesthetics had been used to induce hypothermia, sevoflurane post-conditioning fails to confer additional anti-inflammatory effects after cardiac arrest. Further research in this area is warranted.
